11. Effect on damage caused by Smoking

Nicotine is one of the major hazardous compounds of cigarette smoke and thus mimics most of the deleterious effects of cigarette smoking. It increases lipid peroxidation and thus causes oxidative cellular injury, which is believed to play a major role in the pathogenesis of several smoking-related diseases .

a. A study conducted by Department of biochemistery, Annamalai University India has found out that administration of Ferulic acid (Oryzanol is a Ferulic Acid Ester) reversed the damage induced by nicotine and increases the endogenous antioxidant defense system and protects the cells from oxidative damage, it quenches the free radicals, prevents them from attacking the membrane.
